Sixth Form Provision

At The Gateway School and Technology College we work for the maximum success of each individual. In the planning and development of our fledgling Sixth form provision this drive for the best outcomes for our Post 16 learners is writ large.

The Sixth form at TGS provides three important contributory factors to developing and sustaining a meaningful career and life path. These are:

  1. Qualification routes tailored to optimise individual choice
  2. Vocational training tailored to individual needs
  3. Pastoral experiences and opportunities to enhance still developing social skills and strategizing for emotional disappointment and stress

The Sixth Form department at The Gateway School offers students exciting opportunities to develop their academic and social skills as their move towards adulthood. Our curriculum therefore reflects the changes and transitions that young people begin to experience from 16 to 19 and beyond. Our curriculum is built around a clear and relevant vocational offer which , for the most part , will be offered onsite in our Vocational Learning Centre. Where this is not possible we will use local colleges and providers to meet the individual needs of our learners. Currently, the vocational offer on site is as follows:

  • IMIAL Motor Vehicle Studies Level 1 & 2
  • BTEC Construction Level 1

We also have capacity for Engineering, Fabrication and Welding and Hair and Beauty but these are currently off line.

A key part of this offer is the tailoring of qualification routes based on recognised and relevant academic qualifications. These provide a scaffold for:

  1. the completion of a two year course at TGS
  2. the completion and attainment of qualifications enabling pupils to follow a preferred pathway at college

Students may re sit exams or start completely new courses which will enable them to optimise a parallel vocational pathway or use us as a means of accessing course at college which they previously did not have the necessary grades/points to access.

These qualifications include:

  • GCSE Maths, English and Science
  • Functional skills in Maths, English and ICT

BTECs in ICT, Art & Design, Food Technology and Work Skills

The work of our students is accredited by the AQA, EdExcel and OCR exam boards. This offers differentiated opportunities based on the level the student is working at, allowing personalisation and creativity. Students continue to study a broad and balanced curriculum which also includes a pastoral aspect which focuses on community and helping others. This may also mean that work placements and/or community placements can be set up as part of an individual’s programme.

Some of our students may work within the department for up to three years, whilst we support others to access college after 1-2 years, depending on the transition plan. We support young people to visit a range of colleges and placements in order to inform their choice making. Young people engage in accessible work experience opportunities and receive support to set this up. Transition meetings ensure that students with a higher level of need continue to have regular support and any areas of development are pursued.

It is important to place any description of TGS sixth from provision within the context of a small group of Post 16 pupils who have been transitioned from KS3 /KS4 secondary provision with a focus on SEMH at its core.

In many cases pupils are ready to access training, education and or employment in a mainstream setting. In a few cases students, their parents/carers and /or other stakeholders (such as social services, Catch 22etc) may plan for Post 16 provision with us via Statement of Special Educational Need or EHCP reviews early in Year 11 to ensure a smooth transition with limited emotional distress to pupils who are clearly not emotionally ready for a mainstream options or are unlikely  to gain necessary qualifications to access chosen courses (as previously identified by school and Connexions ) This may be because a  pupil joins us in Year 10 or even in Year 11.

In some cases pupils will just need to be with us until they feel they are emotionally ready to attend a bigger provision, access employment or go into an apprenticeship. In these cases completion of a recognised, meaningful accreditation is still a prerequisite for being offered a place.

This is a key part of the third pastoral aspect of our Post 16 provision and in order to provide structure to this we offer our students a Princes Trust XL Qualification which can track and accredit the valuable contributions that our sixth form make in and around the school as well as offering them the chance to experience new and exciting opportunities in the work place and/or the community.

The xl qualification

Young people in xl clubs work towards Award and Certificate sized qualifications in Personal Development and Teamwork. The qualifications are offered and awarded by The Prince’s Trust which is recognised as an awarding body by Ofqual.

With the qualification in Personal Development and Teamwork, The Prince’s Trust seeks to:

  • Ensure young people have every opportunity to seek formal recognition of their skills and achievements.
  • Provide an excellent support network for our partners to ensure they are able to achieve the best possible results for the young people.
  • Enable young people to set and achieve goals in a relatively short timeframe. xl club members first work towards the Award and may then go on to work towards the Certificate.

 How does the qualification work?

The xl club programme supports learners within Foundation Learning and the qualification in Personal Development and Teamwork appears in the Foundation Learning catalogue.

The qualification supports the delivery of both vocational learning and personal and social development as part of a young person’s personalised learning programme.

The qualification is made up of units and each unit is made up of a number of learning outcomes which must be achieved to the standard defined by the assessment criteria.

Young people in xl clubs record their work in a portfolio of evidence which may include photographs, electronic media, witness statements and written material.  In this way they are able to capture their achievements and, guided by the xl club adviser, map them against the assessment criteria in a unit.
