Behaviour Expectations

As a school that supports young people with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) difficulties, we believe that a well-balanced and thoughtful behaviour policy is not just important—it’s essential.

Many of our pupils face challenges that affect their ability to manage emotions, build relationships, and maintain positive mental health. We are committed to helping them navigate these challenges with compassion, structure, and consistency.

Our Commitment

We are dedicated to preparing our students for life beyond school. This means helping them:

  • Learn how to respond to setbacks, challenges, and successes in healthy and constructive ways.
  • Develop the resilience and emotional literacy needed to thrive in adulthood.
  • Understand that success is not about luck—it’s about growth, support, and opportunity.

We recognise that many of our pupils have experienced trauma, deprivation, or neglect in their early lives. Our behaviour policy is designed to reflect this understanding, forming part of a whole-school curriculum that includes emotional development and social learning—not just academic achievement.

🌟 Our Six Core Values

We believe that learning how to manage behaviour is just as important as academic progress. That’s why we focus on six core values to help our pupils grow into confident, resilient young people.

We encourage every student to work towards:

  1. Balanced Responses
    Learning to handle setbacks and challenges calmly and constructively.

  2. Open Communication
    Being able to talk about difficulties and ask for help when needed.

  3. Reflection
    Thinking about both positive and negative experiences—and learning from them.

  4. Independence
    Making decisions and taking action with confidence and responsibility.

  5. Personal Growth
    Challenging themselves to go beyond what they thought was possible.

  6. Resilience
    Building strength to cope with a wide range of situations and emotions.


Behaviour as Part of Learning

Our behaviour policy is a key part of our whole school curriculum. We assess progress in behaviour just like we do in academic subjects—because it’s a vital part of personal development.

We use two behaviour management approaches together:

1. Relational Approach

  • Focuses on building trust, understanding, and strong relationships.
  • Helps pupils feel safe and supported.

2. Structured System

  • Uses clear rewards and short-term consequences.
  • Helps pupils understand boundaries and expectations.

We always aim to work with our pupils, not do things to them.

We know how important control and relationships are to their success.
