Roles and responsibilities

Teachers

When providing remote learning, teachers are responsible for:

Setting work

During periods of school closure, all teaching staff are expected to continue delivering high-quality learning experiences for their pupils. The following guidelines outline expectations to ensure consistency and effectiveness:

Lesson Planning and Delivery

  • Staff must provide work for the classes and pupils they would normally teach each day.
  • The amount of work should reflect what would typically be covered in a standard lesson.
  • While we recognise that online learning may progress at a different pace than in-person teaching, staff are encouraged to focus on curriculum coverage and learning impact.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Teachers should regularly discuss progress and any challenges with the Headteacher.
  • Collaboration with subject leads and/or the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) is expected, particularly when providing feedback or planning adjustments.

Setting and Sharing Work

  • All work should be set in good time to allow pupils to engage effectively.
  • Work must be uploaded to Microsoft Teams. Where necessary, paper-based work-packs should be prepared and delivered to pupils in advance.

Monitoring and Feedback

  • Staff must ensure they can access completed work from pupils. This will primarily be through Microsoft Teams, but teachers should also track which pupils have received paper packs, when, and for how long.
  • Regular feedback should be provided to pupils to support their progress.
  • As in classroom teaching, there should be a clear structure to learning, aligned with short and medium-term planning.

Staying Connected with Pupils and Parents During School Closure

Staff Communication and Engagement Expectations

To ensure continuity of care and learning during school closures, staff are expected to maintain regular and appropriate contact with pupils and their families.

Maintaining Contact

  • Staff must make regular contact with pupils and their parents/carers, especially those with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), where pastoral and developmental needs are as important as academic progress.
  • Acceptable methods of communication include:
    • Phone calls
    • Emails
    • Microsoft Teams
    • Home visits (where appropriate and recorded)
  • Social media or personal messaging platforms must not be used under any circumstances.
  • All contact must be recorded in the pupil contact list.

Communication Hours

  • Staff are expected to respond to communications from pupils and parents/carers during the school working day only.
  • There is no expectation to respond outside these hours.

Handling Concerns and Complaints

  • Any complaints received should be referred directly to the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) for appropriate handling.
  • Any safeguarding concerns must be:
    • Logged on MyConcern
    • Reported to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) as soon as possible.

Monitoring Engagement

  • If pupils are not completing assigned work, staff should:
    • Record this for future assessment and reporting
    • Inform parents/carers, subject leads, form tutors, and SLT

Supporting EHCP Pupils

  • We understand that remote learning may be particularly challenging for some pupils.
  • Staff are encouraged to think creatively and flexibly to help pupils work toward their EHCP outcome targets.

Virtual Meetings and Online Conduct

When participating in virtual meetings or delivering online lessons, staff must maintain the same professional standards expected on-site.

Professional Appearance and Environment

  • Dress appropriately, as you would in school.
  • Choose a quiet, neutral background free from distractions or inappropriate content.

Data Protection

  • Staff must always adhere to GDPR guidelines.
  • Any potential data breaches must be reported immediately to the GDPR Officer.

Learning Support Assistants

Teaching Assistants play a vital role in supporting pupils who are learning from home. Their responsibilities include both academic and pastoral support, ensuring that all pupils—especially those with additional needs—remain engaged and connected.

Supporting Pupils Remotely

  • TAs are responsible for assisting pupils who are not in school, as identified and allocated on the pupil contact list.
  • Support may include:
    • Helping pupils understand and complete assigned work.
    • Providing encouragement and motivation.
    • Liaising with class teachers to monitor progress and engagement.

Home Visits

  • Where appropriate, TAs may be asked to visit pupils at home to provide additional support.
  • These visits must:
    • Be pre-approved and recorded on the pupil contact list.
    • Follow appropriate social distancing and PPE guidelines.
    • Be conducted professionally and with sensitivity to the family’s circumstances.

Communication and Record-Keeping

  • All interactions with pupils and families must be logged appropriately.
  • TAs should communicate any concerns or observations to the class teacher or relevant member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT).

Safeguarding and Conduct

  • TAs must remain vigilant for any safeguarding concerns and report them immediately via MyConcern.
  • Professional conduct is expected at all times, including during virtual interactions.

Subject Leads

Subject Leaders play a key role in maintaining the quality, consistency, and accessibility of remote education across their curriculum areas. Alongside their teaching duties, they are expected to:

Curriculum Adaptation

  • Review and adjust subject curriculum plans to ensure they are suitable for remote delivery.
  • Identify topics or units that may need to be modified or postponed due to the nature of online learning.

Supporting Teaching Staff

  • Collaborate with teachers delivering remote lessons to ensure:
    • The work set is appropriate for pupils’ age and ability.
    • Content is consistent across classes and aligned with curriculum goals.
  • Provide guidance and support to teachers on effective remote teaching strategies.

Cross-Subject Coordination

  • Work with other Subject Leaders and Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to:
    • Ensure consistency in workload and expectations across subjects.
    • Coordinate deadlines to avoid pupil overload and promote balanced learning.

Monitoring and Quality Assurance

  • Monitor the quality and appropriateness of remote work set by teachers in their subject area.
  • This may include:
    • Holding regular meetings with teaching staff.
    • Reviewing lesson plans and materials uploaded to Microsoft Teams.
    • Gathering feedback from pupils and parents.

Resource Sharing

  • Identify and share high-quality resources that support remote teaching in their subject.
  • Encourage the use of digital tools, platforms, and subject-specific materials that enhance engagement and understanding.

 Senior Leaders

Senior Leaders play a crucial role in overseeing and supporting the school’s remote learning strategy. Alongside any teaching responsibilities, they are expected to:

Strategic Coordination

  • Lead and coordinate the school-wide approach to remote learning.
  • Ensure that systems, expectations, and support structures are clearly communicated and consistently applied across all year groups and subjects.

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Monitor the effectiveness of remote learning by:
    • Reviewing the completion and quality of pupil work
    • Gathering feedback from parents/carers, including during one-to-one visits
    • Checking and analysing entries in the pupil contact list
  • Use this information to identify areas for improvement and provide targeted support to staff and pupils.

Safeguarding and Data Protection

  • Oversee the security and compliance of remote learning systems.
  • Ensure that all digital platforms used for remote learning meet data protection and safeguarding standards.
  • Respond promptly to any reported concerns or breaches, in collaboration with the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and GDPR Officer.

Designated Safeguarding Lead

The DSL is responsible for ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all pupils, with particular attention to those who are most vulnerable.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee safeguarding procedures during remote learning periods.
  • Ensure that adequate support is in place for pupils identified as vulnerable or at risk.
  • Monitor safeguarding concerns raised by staff and respond promptly and appropriately.
  • Liaise with external agencies and support services as needed.
